Mark E. Burling

Mark
has over twenty years of professional experience including over nine
years of combined audit and tax experience. He has extensive
experience with U.S. tax impact of international inbound and outbound
transactions, international executive income tax programs, owner
managed businesses, C corporations, S Corporations and
partnerships. Prior to joining Batchelor, Tillery & Roberts,
LLP in 2007, Mark worked two years as a senior tax manager for KPMG in
the Raleigh office.
He is a member of the American
Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the North Carolina
Association of Certified Public Accountants (NCACPA). He is a
former board member and Treasurer for the Emerson Waldorf School in
Chapel Hill.
Mark received a bachelor of
science degree with a concentration in accounting from Ithaca College
and a masters of business administration degree from the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
John A. Haney
Senior Tax Manager

John has over 13 years of public
and private accounting experience. His experience has allowed him
to foster strong relationships with large and small companies in
varying industries, including real estate, healthcare, professional
services, and manufacturing. John worked for national and local
public accounting firms in Atlanta for seven years prior to joining
Batchelor, Tillery & Roberts, LLP in August 2007.
John is a member of the American
Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the North Carolina
Association of Certified Public Accountants. John and his family
are active members of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church.
John received a bachelor’s
degree in economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill and a master’s degree in accounting from East Carolina
University.
Elizabeth K. Hartley (Beth)
Manager

Beth
has twenty years of public accounting experience providing tax,
accounting, and advisory services to individuals and closely-held
business owners. Her career began in Cincinnati, where she became
president and owner of Kirby & Hartley CPAs before negotiating the
successful sale of the practice and relocating to North Carolina to
accept a position as Chief Financial Officer in private industry. In
2004 when the business was absorbed by a larger company, she returned
to public accounting, joining Batchelor, Tillery & Roberts, LLP.
She is a member of the American
Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the North Carolina
Association of Certified Public Accountants, and the Financial Planning
Association. She serves on the Advisory Board of The Healing Place of
Wake County, and is an active member of Crosspointe Church in Cary.
Beth received her accounting
degree from the University of Cincinnati, and her Masters Degree in
Trust and Investment Management (MTIM) from Campbell University.
Susan Vickers Smith
SeniorAudit Manager

Susan
has over eighteen years of public accounting experience, specializing
in assurance services. She has extensive experience with
nonprofits, commercial entities, and employee benefit plans.
Prior to joining Batchelor, Tillery & Roberts, LLP in 2004 Susan
worked as the Treasurer of a $100 million private foundation, the Chief
Financial Officer of a start-up software company and a Senior Audit
Manager at Deloitte & Touche where she worked 10 years in both the
small business services group and the public company practice.
She is a member of the American
Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the North Carolina
Association of Certified Public Accountants. She is an
active member in a United Methodist Church serving in children’s
choirs for over fifteen years.
Susan is a magna cum laude
graduate of Meredith College receiving a bachelor of science degree in
business administration with a concentration in management.
Pamela M. Spell
Senior Audit Manager

Pam
has over eight years of public accounting experience, specializing in
assurance services. She has extensive experience with large and
small companies in varying industries, including not-for-profits,
healthcare, financial institutions, and manufacturing. Prior to
joining Batchelor, Tillery & Roberts, LLP in 2007, Pam worked for
KPMG in the Raleigh office for over six years.
Pam is a
member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and
the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants.
Pam has served on the board of directors of not-for-profit
organizations such as the Literacy Council of Wake County.
Pam
received a bachelor’s degree in mathematical sciences and a
master’s degree in accounting from the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Keith A. Wasserman
Tax Director

Keith has over eighteen years of
public accounting experience. He has experience providing
accounting, financial planning, and business advisory services in a
wide range of industries including nonprofit, real estate,
manufacturing, retail, service and high technology. Prior to
joining Batchelor, Tillery & Roberts, LLP, Keith worked at Ernst
& Young in the Raleigh office for five years.
Keith is a member of the American
Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the North Carolina
Association of Certified Public Accountants, and Beta Gamma Sigma
Academic Society. He is a member of the North Carolina State
Museum of Natural Sciences and has served as treasurer of the NC
D.A.R.E Foundation.
Keith received a bachelor’s
degree in personnel and industrial relations from Syracuse University
where he graduated summa cum laude and a master’s of business
administration degree in accounting from St. John’s University.
